mottoThe "Essence of Chinese Reading" is a virtual library of public domain Chinese books built for school goers who are looking for side readings for enhancing their literacy in chinese and enriching their knowledge in the civilization of china. All the archived books are copyright free in the sense that their term of copyright protection has expired in Hong Kong and most countries. They are organized in a way conformed to the conventional approach of chinese studies, including the classification of subject and progress of study. In the absence of fancy graphical decoration, irrelevant narration of personal feeling or affairs of the site owner and commercial advertisement, the virtual library provides the readers a clean, simple and straight forward interface for the visitors to browse and clip the ebook content. It is not intended to grow into a mega book library comparable to "Gutenberg booksProject" or "Wikisource Project" but only serves as a mini documentary archive of selected reference books for chinese studies and general studies up to high school level. To ensure the maximum accuracy of the text content and portability of the eboIn the light that the term of copyright protection varies from 50 years to 100 years across country borders, the most conservative criterion is held in choosing the books for the avoidance of copyright dispute arising from the different legal contexts in different jurisdictions. Only the books of authors who have been deceased for 100 years are archived; URLs or special notice provided for less than 100 years; and not considered whatsoever for less than 50 years.

The archives of chinese literal works are not merely the cultural legacy of china for chinese people but the common assets for all human beings. To our surprise, all the prominent projects intended for the digitalization of chinese books in the public domain such as "Google Books", "Wikisource", and "Gutenberg" are initialized by foreign organizations and funded by foreign people. In addition to the deterioration of the language power of the younger generation especially in Hong Kong, it is deemed to be the shame of chinese people in the conservation of heritage of our ancestors.

memory card

The scholars and government officials in charge of education policy in mainland China and Taiwan knows very well that the acquaintance to classical Chinese can greatly improve the proficiency of modern chinese which inherits a lot of the essence of ancient chinese literal works. As a matter of fact, an affordable virtu al library consisting of thousands of useful reference books in the public domain is at everybody's finger tips as it only occupies a few GB memory on a memory card. Nevertheless, being unaware of a low cost but effective approach to e nhance the general standard of Chinese language is available to ordinary people as a result of the development of digital technology, the prevailing language education policy in Hong Kong is misled to rely heavily on expensive copyrighted teaching materials written by the editorial team of publishers while the treasury of many copyright free Chinese classics is left unattended. The "Essence of Chinese Reading" is just an attempt of the editor to rectify the current situation. He is neither a scholar in Chinese studies nor an education professional but merely a reader fond of reading chinese classics. No or little personal critics will be added to the text of the books. Third party commentaries or study guid e may be linked in the future for visitors' referenceoks, all the archives are authored in HTML file format in traditional Chinese encoded with ISO 8859-1 or UTF-8 character set.
